Fix Scratches on RTA Cabinets After Installation (Without Replacing Panels)

RTA cabinet scratches follow a predictable pattern: a corner dinged during transport from the car, a drag mark from a screwdriver sliding across a panel face, an edge chip where a cabinet box was set down on concrete, a scratch near the hinge mounting from the bit slipping. The damage appears during assembly and installation — exactly the moment you're too busy to stop and fix it — and it's still there when the kitchen is done.
The standard solution RTA brands offer is replacement. Order a new door, a new panel, wait two to four weeks, and interrupt the kitchen again when it arrives. For scratches that are cosmetically fixable, that's a significant overreaction.
RTA cabinets do require a different repair approach than solid wood cabinets — the materials are different, and applying the wrong method makes the damage worse. But the correct approach is fast, produces results that are invisible at kitchen viewing distance, and costs a fraction of a replacement panel.
Why RTA Cabinets Get Scratched During Installation
Understanding the cause of RTA damage helps assess both severity and the correct fix.
Transport and handling damage is the earliest source. Flat-packed RTA boxes are dense and awkward — pulling a panel across a box edge, leaning a door against an abrasive surface, or sliding a stacked piece across concrete creates scratches before a single screw goes in. These tend to be long, shallow drag marks across the panel face.
Assembly tool contact is the highest-probability damage source during installation. A screwdriver tip skipping off a cam lock and skating across a panel face. A drill bit deflecting off a hinge hole and leaving a gouge near the mount point. A mallet strike that landed on the panel edge rather than the joint. These marks tend to be shorter, sharper, and sometimes deeper than handling scratches.
Stack damage during installation happens when cabinet boxes are stored temporarily against each other before mounting — the corner of one box pressing against the face of another, or a door stack tipping and striking another panel. These create point-impact chips and edge compressions.
Edge and corner exposure is structural to how RTA cabinets are made. The visible edges of MDF-core panels are the most vulnerable points — they're the cut end grain of the core material, often wrapped in a thin edgebanding strip that chips easily under impact. Any corner that gets bumped during installation is a candidate for edgebanding damage.
Types of Damage (Laminate, MDF, Painted Surfaces)
RTA cabinets use several surface finish types, and each behaves differently when scratched and when repaired.
Laminate and thermofoil are the dominant surface finishes for IKEA and most mid-range RTA brands. A thin plastic or vinyl layer is bonded to the MDF substrate. When scratched, laminate exposes the lighter MDF core beneath — producing a highly visible white or gray mark against the colored surface. The core exposure is the visual problem to solve, and the repair approach differs from solid wood.
On laminate surfaces, the scratch rarely creates a structural void deep enough to require filling. The exposed core is the issue — and the correct first step is color, not fill. A touch-up marker darkening the exposed core makes the scratch nearly invisible without any raised material. Filler is only needed if the scratch has created a groove deep enough to catch a fingernail.
MDF with a painted finish is common on door fronts — especially in white and off-white kitchens. The MDF substrate absorbs paint well and takes a smooth, uniform finish. Scratches on painted MDF reveal the gray-brown substrate beneath the paint and often have slightly raised edges where the paint chip fractured. These need color restoration after any structural fill.
Melamine-coated panels (the interiors and sides of most RTA box cabinets) are a step below thermofoil in thickness. Melamine chips more readily than thermofoil and shows damage at edges and corners particularly easily. The repair approach is the same as laminate, but the melamine coating is thinner and takes marker slightly differently.
Solid wood or veneer door fronts are found on premium RTA lines. These repair identically to standard wood cabinet doors — the full range of wax filler and layered marker technique applies without the laminate-specific considerations.
How to Fix Light Scratches on RTA Cabinets
Light scratches — those that show the core or substrate color but don't create a groove — are the most common RTA damage and the fastest to fix.
Step 1 — Clean the surface. RTA panels often arrive with a protective film residue, fingerprint oils from assembly, and sometimes silicone from the box packaging. All of these interfere with marker adhesion. Wipe the scratched area with a mild degreaser or rubbing alcohol on a clean cloth. Allow to dry fully — 10–15 minutes — before any product application.
Step 2 — Try marker before filler. On laminate and thermofoil cabinets, scratches often expose a lighter core. Rather than filling first and creating a raised patch, use the TUS Touch-Up Marker Set to darken the exposed area first. Press the marker tip gently into the scratch and apply one light pass. Blot immediately with a cloth to diffuse the pigment into the exposed substrate. This step alone resolves many laminate scratches without any further treatment — the core is colored, the surface color is restored, and no filler was involved.
Step 3 — Assess whether filler is needed. After the marker dries (5 minutes), run your fingernail across the scratch. If the surface is smooth, the repair is done — proceed to the sheen-matching step. If your nail catches in a groove, the scratch has created a surface depression that needs filling before the color work is final.
Step 4 — Apply a second, blending pass if needed. If the first marker pass is slightly off in color or coverage, apply a second pass with an adjacent shade — lighter or darker — in short feathered strokes. On laminate surfaces, the uniformity of the surrounding finish means even small color variations are visible. Build carefully and blot after each pass.
Step 5 — Match the sheen. Most RTA cabinets have a matte or satin finish. Marker pigment when dried has a slightly different surface texture than laminate or painted MDF. After the marker is fully dry, buff lightly with a dry lint-free cloth. This smooths the dried pigment surface and reduces any micro-sheen variation against the surrounding finish. On matte-finish cabinets, avoid buffing too aggressively — over-buffing increases the sheen beyond what the surrounding finish carries.
How to Repair Chips, Corners, and Edge Damage

Chips on panel faces: Clean and dry the chip thoroughly. If the chip has exposed raw MDF substrate, make sure the substrate surface is stable — any loose fibers should be cleared before filling. Select a filler shade from the wax kit that approximates the cabinet surface color. For white or light-colored cabinets, the lightest available filler shade is the starting point — you'll adjust the color with markers.
Press the wax firmly into the chip, slightly overfilling. Level with a plastic putty knife at a low angle — never metal on laminate surfaces, which it will scratch immediately. Allow 15–20 minutes to harden.
Once set, apply the TUS Touch-Up Marker Set over the fill. On laminate cabinets, a single well-matched shade applied flat is often sufficient — laminate has no grain to replicate. On painted MDF, the same approach applies: single-color restoration with careful sheen matching at the end.
Edge chips and corner damage (edgebanding): Edge chips on RTA panels expose the MDF core at the most visible seam on the cabinet. The repair sequence is the same — clean, fill, color — but the geometry requires additional care.
Fill the chipped edge with wax, pressing firmly to seat the filler against the MDF core. When leveling, hold the putty knife flat along the edge face and draw it toward the corner rather than away — this creates a clean, sharp edge profile rather than a rounded bump. For corner chips at the intersection of two edges, build each edge separately rather than trying to fill the entire corner at once.
After filling and hardening, apply marker with the edge-shading technique: a slightly darker shade along the outer perimeter of the repair and a lighter or mid-tone shade toward the center face of the filled area. This creates the visual impression of edge depth that makes the repair read as the same profile as the surrounding intact edge.
Screw area and hinge mounting damage: Small chips around pilot holes and hinge mounts are the most forgiving repairs on RTA cabinets because hardware covers much of the surrounding area. Fill with a small amount of wax, level flush, and apply a color pass with the marker. The hardware will cover the edges of the repair — only the visible center of the chip is exposed to evaluation.
Mistakes to Avoid (That Can Ruin the Finish)
Sanding laminate or thermofoil surfaces. Laminate and thermofoil are thin finish layers over MDF — 0.3–1mm in most cases. Any sanding immediately cuts through the finish layer and into the MDF core, creating a visible dull spot that can't be repaired without replacing the panel. Never sand RTA cabinet surfaces. Use markers for color and wax filler for structural voids only.
Applying filler to a scratch that only needs color. Wax filler applied to a shallow laminate scratch with no groove creates a raised patch that catches light and stands out more than the original mark. The marker-first test (Step 2 above) prevents this. If the scratch can be resolved with color alone, don't add filler.
Using metal scrapers to level filler. Metal tools scratch laminate and thermofoil immediately. Use only plastic putty knives or credit card edges for all filler leveling on RTA surfaces.
Applying too much marker in one pass. On laminate surfaces, thick marker application takes longer to dry and is more prone to smearing before it sets. Multiple thin passes with dry time between each produce a more even, durable result.
Using furniture repair crayons or oil-based markers. Consumer crayon-type furniture repairs are formulated for solid wood and wood lacquer finishes. On laminate and thermofoil, the wax base in crayons doesn't bond to the plastic surface properly and rubs off under kitchen use. Use hardwood-formulated products — the chemistry matters on these surface types.
Fix It Before the Kitchen Gets Used
RTA cabinet scratches are easiest to repair before the kitchen is back in full use. Once cooking and cleaning begins, the damage area accumulates oil, steam exposure, and cleaning product residue that complicates surface preparation. A scratch repaired on installation day takes 20 minutes. The same scratch repaired six months later takes twice as long because of surface prep requirements.
