How Do You Know When a Scratch Is Too Deep to Touch Up?

A scratch gets harder to touch up as it deepens for two reasons. First, a groove with physical depth catches light and throws a shadow regardless of what color sits over it. Paint the scratch perfectly and the shadow line is still visible. Second, scratches that cut through the finish expose raw wood fiber, and raw fiber absorbs pigment at a different rate than sealed surrounding surface. The angled light test

Hold a flashlight so the beam rakes across the surface at roughly 10 to 20 degrees from parallel — almost flat to the wood. Overhead light shows color. Angled light shows geometry.

A surface scratch with no void to cast shadow often disappears almost entirely under raking light. That's a marker-only repair.

A scratch with genuine depth shows a shadow line running its full length. The shadow is the void. Faint shadow: filler may or may not be necessary — do the fingernail test to confirm. Distinct, consistent shadow under room-level raking light: the void is deep enough that color correction alone won't hide it.

When does a touch-up marker actually work?
