The filler is a single flat color. Even a perfectly color-matched filler produces a visible repair because real wood isn't one flat color — it has depth, variation, and grain texture. A solid fill, however close the shade, reads as paint against wood because it lacks the visual complexity of the surrounding surface.
The surface level isn't flush. Filler that dried slightly above or below the surrounding wood catches light differently and creates a visible texture difference even if the color is correct. Above-flush repairs look raised in raking light; below-flush repairs look like subtle depressions.

Choosing the Right Filler Color (Most People Get This Wrong)

This is wrong for physical matching but right for the final visual result. Here's why: once the filler is applied and leveled, you'll apply marker color on top to build toward the correct shade. Starting with a lighter filler gives you a surface that accepts the marker layers evenly and produces the final shade through the marker work — not through the filler alone.
If you start with a filler that matches the floor or furniture exactly, any marker you apply on top pushes the repair darker than the surrounding wood. The filler has no room to receive color; it's already at the target shade. The result is a repair that's darker than the surrounding surface, which is actually more visible than the original chip.
Always slightly under-match the filler color and build depth with markers afterward — trying to match the exact color in one step is what creates the visible patch.
For light to medium woods (natural oak, maple, light walnut): select a mid-range filler shade that's clearly one step lighter than the wood body color.
For dark woods (espresso, dark walnut, mahogany): select a warm medium-brown filler rather than the near-black shade. The final dark color will come from the marker layers.

Step-by-Step: How to Apply Wood Filler Properly
Step 1 — Clean and prepare the damage area. Remove all loose debris from the chip or gouge. If the chip has splintered edges with loose material still attached, remove the unstable fragments before filling — filler applied over loose edges will crack at those points over time. Wipe the area with a damp cloth and allow to dry completely.

How to Blend the Repair Into the Surrounding Wood
With the structural fill correctly leveled and hardened, the repair is structurally complete. Visually, it's a pale or differently-toned patch. Color blending converts it.

Drawing grain lines: Using the darkest shade in your set and the fine marker tip, draw two to four lines across the filled area in the direction of the grain. The lines don't need to be perfectly straight — real grain meanders and varies in width slightly. Short, slightly irregular strokes that follow the general grain direction of the surrounding wood are more convincing than perfectly straight parallel lines.
Vary the line density and darkness: some lines slightly lighter, some slightly darker, some slightly thicker. Look at the surrounding wood for reference — your grain lines should approximate the pattern and density already present.
Blot lightly after each grain stroke to soften the edges slightly.
Checking depth from multiple angles: After the grain lines are applied, check the repair from raking light. A repair that looks correct from above may still read as flat from the side.
