How to Fix Scratches on Prefinished Hardwood (It's Different Than Site-Finished Floors)

The advice that works for site-finished hardwood — scuff with steel wool, apply a maintenance coat, spot-sand and re-stain — will ruin a prefinished floor. The factory finish on prefinished hardwood is fundamentally different from the finish applied on-site after installation, and treating it the same way is one of the most common ways a straightforward repair turns into a plank replacement.

If you have prefinished hardwood and visible scratches, the path forward is marker and wax filler — not sandpaper, not stain, not a fresh coat of floor finish applied over the factory surface. This guide explains why, and walks through the correct repair method for both light and deep scratches on factory-finished planks.

What Makes Prefinished Hardwood Different from Site-Finished Floors

The distinction matters because the finish layers behave completely differently under repair attempts.

Site-finished floors are sanded smooth after installation and finished in place — typically with 3–4 coats of water-based or oil-based polyurethane applied wet and allowed to cure at room temperature. The finish penetrates into the sanded wood surface and bonds mechanically. Because the finish was applied on-site, it can also be repaired on-site: additional finish coats will bond to the existing surface, and the whole floor can be sanded back to bare wood and refinished when needed.

Prefinished floors arrive from the factory with the finish already applied under controlled conditions — and critically, with curing methods that produce a surface no field-applied product can match. The industry standard for prefinished hardwood is an aluminum-oxide UV-cured finish: a finish infused with microscopic aluminum oxide particles (the same material used in industrial sandpaper) and cured instantly under ultraviolet light rather than air-dried. This produces a surface that is 3–5 times harder than field-applied polyurethane and significantly more scratch-resistant in daily use.

The trade-off: that hardness makes it chemically incompatible with most field-applied finish products. Applying a coat of polyurethane over an aluminum-oxide UV finish doesn't bond — it sits on the surface, peels within weeks, and leaves a worse appearance than the original scratch. Sanding the finish back is technically possible, but it removes the aluminum-oxide layer that makes the floor durable and leaves a surface that can't be re-created without factory equipment.

The practical implication: prefinished hardwood scratches are color problems and surface-texture problems, not finish-adhesion problems. The correct tools address color (markers) and structural voids (wax filler) — not finish chemistry.

Types of Scratches You'll See on Prefinished Floors

Because the factory finish is harder than site-finished polyurethane, the scratch pattern on prefinished floors differs from what you'd expect on conventional hardwood.

Sheen scratches — surface-level marks that alter the reflective quality of the finish without creating a groove — are extremely common on aluminum-oxide floors. The hardness resists penetration, so many impacts that would cut into a softer finish simply scuff the surface and change how it reflects light. These appear as dull, cloudy, or white-ish marks, particularly visible when light hits the floor at a low angle. There's no groove — your fingernail glides over them. Color restoration with a marker, followed by a sheen-matching buff, addresses these completely.

Finish-layer scratches have cut through the topcoat but haven't reached the wood beneath. The scratch line is clearly visible, catches the light, and may show a slightly lighter color inside — but the wood grain and stain are intact beneath it. These respond well to marker-only repair.

Wood-deep scratches have penetrated through all finish layers into the wood veneer itself. On prefinished engineered hardwood, the veneer layer is typically 2–6mm thick, which limits how deep a scratch can go before reaching the core material. On prefinished solid hardwood, scratches can go deeper. These require wax filler before color work begins.

Edge bevel damage is specific to prefinished planks, most of which have a micro-bevel or bevel at the plank edges — a slight angle cut into the top edge of each plank that creates the characteristic shadow line between planks. This edge is the most vulnerable point on a prefinished floor: foot traffic, dragged furniture, and pet claws all preferentially damage the beveled edge. Chips and scratches at the bevel require a fine tip and careful color work to repair without filling in the shadow line that gives the floor its visual character.

How to Fix Light Scratches Without Damaging the Finish

Light scratches — sheen marks and finish-layer scratches — are a color and sheen restoration problem. No structural void needs filling. The repair is marker application followed by a sheen-matching buff.

Step 1 — Clean the area. Use a damp cloth with a manufacturer-approved hardwood floor cleaner. Prefinished floors often accumulate a micro-layer of cleaning product residue that interferes with marker adhesion. Clean the scratch and the surrounding 4–6 inches of plank and allow to dry completely — 15 minutes minimum.

Step 2 — Match the shade from the TUS Touch-Up Marker Set. Test the marker on an inconspicuous area — inside a closet, under a furniture piece that won't be moved — before applying to the scratch. Prefinished hardwood colors are factory-standardized and often distinctive; it's worth taking an extra 5 minutes to confirm the shade is right. Step 3 — Apply with light, single-direction strokes. Follow the direction of the wood grain. For sheen scratches with no groove, a single light pass is often sufficient — you're depositing color into the surface micro-texture of the damaged area, not filling a void. For scratches with a visible groove, apply two to three passes with the marker slightly pressed into the groove, blotting with a cloth between each pass.

Step 4 — Buff to match the sheen. This step is critical on prefinished hardwood, and it's the one most guides omit. Prefinished floors often carry a high-sheen or semi-gloss factory finish. Marker pigment, when it dries, leaves a slightly matte surface. After the marker has dried for 10 minutes, lightly buff the repaired area with a dry lint-free cloth using circular motions. The buffing action smooths the dried pigment layer and increases its reflectivity — bringing it closer to the sheen of the surrounding factory finish.

For repairs that still read slightly duller than the surrounding floor after buffing, a small amount of paste wax applied over the repair and buffed off will normalize the sheen on most prefinished finish types. Do not apply liquid polyurethane or water-based finish over the repair — it won't bond to the aluminum-oxide surface and will cloud and peel.

Step 5 — Assess in raking light. View the repair from a low angle with light hitting the floor at a shallow angle — the same conditions under which the scratch was most visible. Assess for color match and sheen match independently. A repair that passes both tests in raking light will be invisible at normal standing height.

How to Repair Deeper Scratches and Edge Damage

For scratches that have reached the wood and for edge bevel damage, wax filler precedes color work.

Step 1 — Clean and dry thoroughly. Same process as above. Wax filler applied over contaminated surfaces bonds poorly and will shrink or separate within weeks under foot traffic.

For bevel edge damage, apply the filler into the chipped area while being careful not to fill the bevel shadow line itself — the groove between planks should remain open. The shadow line is a visual feature of the floor; filling it eliminates the definition between planks and makes the repair more visible, not less.

Slightly overfill, then level with a plastic putty knife at a low angle. Allow 15–20 minutes to harden before marker application.

Step 4 — Apply color in layers. Follow the marker layering technique: light base tone first across the filled area, building toward the floor color with a second slightly darker pass, adding two or three thin grain-line strokes with the darkest shade in the direction of the wood grain. Each layer should dry before the next is applied. The filled surface may absorb marker slightly differently than the surrounding factory finish — build slowly.

Step 5 — Buff for sheen match. As with light scratch repairs, buff the final marker layer with a dry cloth after 10 minutes to match the factory finish sheen. The sheen match on deep scratch repairs is as important as the color match — a visually seamless result requires both.

Mistakes to Avoid on Prefinished Hardwood

Sanding the scratch. Even 400-grit paper will cut through the aluminum-oxide finish layer in seconds. Once sanded, the prefinished surface cannot be restored without replacing the plank. The scratch will look better after sanding than before — but the surrounding sanded area will look visibly different from the intact factory finish on all adjacent planks.

Applying liquid floor finish over the repair. Field-applied polyurethane, water-based finish, and oil-based finish will not bond to an aluminum-oxide UV-cured surface. The product will dry on the surface, appear to look fine initially, and then peel, cloud, or delaminate within days to weeks of foot traffic.

Using a single dark marker shade on a scratch field. On prefinished hardwood with visible grain, a single solid-color marker application reads as a painted rectangle — particularly visible because the high-sheen factory finish creates contrast between the repaired and unrepaired areas. Layered application with two to three tones eliminates this.

Filling the bevel shadow line. The gap between planks on beveled prefinished flooring is part of the floor's visual design. Filling it with wax filler makes the repair area look like a single undivided surface — obviously different from the surrounding planks that still show their individual definition.

Using furniture markers or generic wood markers. Consumer-grade furniture touch-up markers are formulated for furniture lacquer finishes, not for hardwood flooring finish systems. Color consistency and longevity under foot traffic are not the same. Product designed for hardwood flooring produces results that hold up; furniture markers fade quickly in high-contact areas.
