How to Source Touch-Up Products That Match Your Finish Spec (Without Costly Mismatches)

A touch-up product that almost matches the finish spec creates more complaints than no touch-up product at all. The customer who opens a kit and sees a visible mismatch has proof the manufacturer either skipped testing or didn't care. Both readings damage the brand. And the procurement mistake behind it is usually small: approving a color match under one light source, or matching against a finish sample instead of the actual installed product.
Getting this right takes more specificity than most sourcing processes apply to touch-up products. Color is one variable out of four. Sheen, chemistry, and substrate compatibility are the other three. A product that matches on color and fails on any of the other three produces a repair more visible than the damage it covers.
Why Matching Touch-Up Products to Finish Specs Matters
The installed product and the touch-up product need to match under the conditions the customer will assess them. Not laboratory conditions. Not a single light source. Not the moment of application while the product is still wet.
Four failure modes drive most complaints:
Metamerism. Two colors that appear identical under one light source can appear different under another. A touch-up approved under cool LED lighting in a procurement office may look identical to spec there, and noticeably off under the warm incandescent lighting in a customer's living room. Single-light approvals routinely produce this complaint.
Color shift on drying. Most markers and paints shift color as they cure. Markers tend to dry slightly darker. Paints can shift in both color and sheen. Approval against a wet sample sets the wrong reference point.
Sheen difference. A matte touch-up on a satin finish reads as a distinct zone regardless of color accuracy. Sheen accuracy is roughly as important as color accuracy, and it's the variable most often skipped.
Chemistry incompatibility. A touch-up product approved only for color fit can fail operationally: adhesion failure, fisheye, color migration, or long-term yellowing. The wrong chemistry on the wrong finish is the most serious of the four failure modes because it shows up later, after the customer has already accepted the repair.
Breaking Down Your Finish Specification
Before sourcing begins, document the finish spec in four dimensions. If you can't fill in all four, you don't have a spec, you have a guess.

A quick reference for sheen categories, since this is where most spec sheets get vague:
- Flat / matte: 0–10 GU
- Eggshell: 10–25 GU
- Satin: 25–45 GU
- Semi-gloss: 45–70 GU
- Gloss: 70+ GU

How to Source the Right Touch-Up Products
Step 1. Submit the full specification. Send all four dimensions to the supplier on the initial request. If the supplier doesn't ask about sheen and chemistry alongside color, they're not matching against the full spec. That's a disqualifier.
Step 2. Request samples matched to specification, not pulled from a stock library. Stock libraries are "close to" common specs. For a production-scale touch-up program, custom-matched samples produce dramatically better results. At volume, the cost difference is small. The complaint-reduction value is large.
Step 3. Test samples against the installed product, not the spec sheet. Finish samples are made under controlled conditions that don't always reflect production variation. The final approval reference should be a production piece finished with the current coating run. If the spec sheet and the installed product don't agree, the installed product wins because that's what the customer sees.

Testing and Approving Matches Before Bulk Orders
Approval protocol matters as much as product selection. A great match approved badly fails in production. A decent match approved rigorously holds up.
The three-light test
Evaluate the match under three distinct light sources:
- Natural daylight, north-facing if possible. Consistent with professional color evaluation standards (CIE D65).
- Warm light, 2700K LED or incandescent. Representative of residential living rooms.
- Cool neutral light, 4000–5000K LED. Representative of kitchens and offices.
A match that passes all three is spectrally balanced and will not generate metamerism complaints. A match that passes only one will.
Dry-state only
All approvals happen after full cure on a test piece. Minimum cure times:
- Markers: 24 hours
- Waterborne paints: 48 hours
- Oil-based products: 72 hours
Wet-state evaluation introduces color shift error every time. No exceptions.
Application on representative substrate

Field application by a real operator
Sample applications during approval should be done by a typical operator following the intended SOP, not a skilled finisher demonstrating ideal technique. Operator variation is part of real-world results. Approval by demo doesn't predict field outcome.
Written approval documentation
Document the conditions of approval: light sources tested, substrate, application method, cure time, and product formulation including batch number if the supplier provides it. This documentation is the only protection against silent substitution errors during reorder.
Common Sourcing Mistakes (and How to Avoid Them)
Approving under a single light source. The metamerism trap. Use three lights, every time.
Matching against a photo or print. Color rendition varies with camera, file compression, and display calibration. Always match against a physical reference panel or installed piece. Photos are useful for shortlisting, not for approval.
Sourcing by color name. "Medium walnut" is not a spec. L*a*b* values or a physical reference are specs. Color names index a SKU, they don't define a color.
Accepting the finish manufacturer's "recommended" touch-up kit without independent testing. Finish suppliers recommend touch-up products for chemistry compatibility with their finish system. That's useful but not sufficient. Their recommendation is not tuned to your specific color and sheen run. Test the recommendation against your installed product before approving it.
No re-approval protocol for batch changes. Touch-up products vary batch to batch. Set a written protocol requiring re-approval when the supplier changes batch, formulation, or raw material source. Without one, a single quiet batch change can put a mismatch into production before anyone notices.
