Getting the specification right before engaging suppliers avoids the expensive back-and-forth of iterating through incompatible requirements. This guide provides the specification framework: what to define, in what order, and how each decision constrains the next.

What It Means to Spec Touch-Up Products for White-Label

White-label specification is different from product procurement in one fundamental way: you're defining what the product needs to be, not evaluating what's available. Procurement compares existing options; specification defines requirements and then finds suppliers who can meet them.

For touch-up products, the specification process has three layers:

Performance specification: What the product must do — adhesion to specific substrates, color stability under defined conditions, durability under expected use patterns. These are testable, objective criteria that define whether the product is acceptable.

Specify each substrate type your product will encounter; adhesion on "wood surfaces" is not a specification.

Color stability. Define the acceptable color shift after UV exposure and temperature cycling. For products sold to end customers who may not use them immediately, stability over 12–18 months of storage is relevant. For products supplied to professional installers who use them rapidly, a shorter stability horizon may be acceptable. Specify what your use case requires and require test data confirming the product meets it.

Durability under use. For flooring applications, specify resistance to foot traffic compression and cleaning product contact. For furniture, specify resistance to handling and surface wiping. Quantify where possible: minimum wipe cycles, minimum compressive resistance. Suppliers who can provide test data against these requirements are operating with formal quality frameworks.

Usability profile. Define the expected user for each product in the program. A professional installer kit can assume technique skill; a consumer kit cannot. The usability requirement affects product formulation (how forgiving is the application window), instruction design (how much technique guidance is needed), and packaging (does the packaging reinforce correct application?).

Color Range and SKU Strategy

SKU count is the commercial decision with the highest downstream impact on program economics. More SKUs mean better color coverage but higher MOQ exposure, more complex inventory management, and higher production cost per unit at a given volume.

Start with a core range, not a complete range. A practical principle: start with a core SKU set of light, medium, and dark tones instead of trying to match every finish — this reduces complexity while still covering most real-world use cases. For wood touch-up products, three to five SKUs in warm and cool tones cover approximately 80% of the flooring and furniture finishes your customers will encounter.

The remaining 20% — unusual species, custom stain colors, atypical finishes — can be addressed through a custom matching service if your program volume warrants it, or excluded from the initial launch and added based on customer demand.

The program that makes economic sense at 1,000 units per month may look very different at 5,000 units per month. Technical capability match. The supplier must be able to produce products that meet your performance specification.
