A kitchen remodel ends and the cabinets — brand new or freshly refinished — have already taken damage. A chip at the corner of a door from a countertop template that got too close. None of this is unusual. Every kitchen installation produces some of this damage, and none of it requires repainting the cabinet, replacing the door, or calling the contractor back. Common Cabinet Damage After a Kitchen Remodel

Cabinet doors and drawer fronts are handled repeatedly during installation — carried in stacks, leaned against walls, repositioned while hardware is installed — and their edges and corners take impact. Edge chips typically appear at the top and bottom corners of doors, along the long edges near hardware, and at the hinge side where doors were set down during mounting.
Surface scratches and drag marks come from tools, hardware bags, drill cases, and contractor equipment that contacts the cabinet face during work. These are finish-layer marks in most cases: the topcoat has been scratched but the substrate beneath is intact.
Paint scuffs and transfer marks are a specific type common on painted cabinets — a different-colored material has been deposited on the cabinet surface during contact. These often look like scratches but are actually raised marks rather than grooves. Many clean off with a damp cloth before any repair product is needed.
Hardware mounting marks appear around hinge holes, handle screws, and pull locations — small paint or finish chips from the installation process, compression marks from overtightened hardware, or off-center pilot holes that left a visible divot beside the actual fastener.
Laminate lifting and edge separation is specific to thermofoil or laminate cabinets — the wrap material has partially separated at a corner or edge during the remodel, leaving a lifted flap or exposed substrate at the edge.

What to Use for Each Type of Cabinet Damage

How to Fix Scratches and Surface Scuffs
Surface scratches on painted cabinets and stained wood cabinets behave differently, but the repair sequence is the same.
Step 1 — Clean the cabinet surface. Kitchens accumulate grease, silicone, and installation residue during remodels. Any of these on the surface will prevent marker from adhering correctly. Use a degreaser or mild soap solution on a clean cloth, wipe the damaged area and the surrounding 4–6 inches, and let it dry completely — 20 minutes minimum. Do not use oil-based cleaners before marker application.
Step 2 — Test the marker shade first. Cabinet colors are more standardized than floor colors, but a shade that's slightly off on a cabinet face is more visible than on a floor because cabinets are viewed at eye level and close range. Step 5 — Buff for sheen consistency. After the final pass dries (10 minutes), buff the repaired area with a dry lint-free cloth using light circular motions. Cabinet finishes vary in sheen — satin, semi-gloss, and high-gloss are all common. Buffing after marker application increases the surface sheen of the repair. If the repaired area still reads duller than the surrounding cabinet finish after buffing, a small amount of matching clear topcoat brushed over the repair and allowed to dry will normalize the sheen.
How to Repair Chips, Dents, and Edge Damage
Chips and edge damage are the most visible post-remodel cabinet problems and the most rewarding to fix — a clean filler-and-marker repair on a chipped door edge changes the perceived quality of the entire cabinet significantly.
Step 1 — Clean and dry the damaged area. Remove any loose paint, finish chips, or debris from the chip. If the chip has exposed raw wood or MDF substrate, the substrate needs to be dry and stable before filler is applied. If the substrate has compressed or crumbled at the chip edge, use a small tool to remove any loose material — filler bonds to stable substrate, not to crumbled edges.

Slightly overfill, then level with the putty knife at a low angle parallel to the cabinet face. For corner chips, hold the knife at a 45-degree angle to create a clean corner edge. Allow 15–20 minutes to harden fully before any marker application.
Step 4 — Apply color with the shading technique. This is the technique from the brief that makes edge repairs disappear: once the filler has hardened, apply a slightly darker marker shade along the outer edges of the repair — mimicking the natural shadow that falls on a real cabinet edge. Then apply a lighter or mid-tone shade in the center of the repair. This light-center, dark-edge shading reproduces the three-dimensional appearance of a cabinet edge without any material depth, making the flat repair read as having the same shape as the surrounding intact edge.
On stained wood cabinets, add thin grain-line strokes over the repair using the darkest shade in the set, following the grain direction of the surrounding wood.
On painted cabinets, a single mid-tone pass plus shading at the edges is usually sufficient — painted surfaces don't have grain to replicate.
Step 5 — Smooth and protect. After the marker work is dry, lightly sand the repair with 400-grit sandpaper if any texture irregularity remains from the filler edge. Wipe clean with a dry cloth. If the cabinet has a semi-gloss or gloss finish, apply a thin coat of matching clear topcoat over the repair to harden the wax surface and normalize the sheen. Blending the Repair for a Seamless Finish
Individual repairs done correctly address each specific damage point — but the final step is assessing the cabinet face as a whole and blending any remaining inconsistencies before the kitchen is considered finished.
Check all repairs in kitchen lighting. The light conditions that matter are the ones the kitchen lives in — overhead fixtures, under-cabinet lighting, and natural light from windows. A repair that reads correctly under one light source may show a sheen or color difference under another. Do the final inspection under all three light conditions and address any remaining visibility before moving furniture back into position.
Blend hard color edges with a cloth. Any marker repair that ends in a visible line rather than fading into the surrounding finish can be softened by lightly wiping the boundary with a clean cloth. This picks up a small amount of dried pigment and diffuses it outward, eliminating the hard edge.
Address sheen inconsistencies last. On painted cabinets especially, sheen mismatch is often more visible than color mismatch. After all color work is complete, look at each repaired area from an angle and compare its reflectivity to the surrounding cabinet. A light topcoat application over any repair that reads flatter or glossier than the surrounding finish brings everything into consistency.
