How to Touch Up Engineered Hardwood After Installation

Installing engineered hardwood is a multi-day project. Finding scratches, chipped edges, or nail marks on day one — or even day ten — is frustrating, but it's also normal. Tools get dragged across planks during install. Transitions get tapped too hard. Nailers leave marks. The question isn't whether your floor will have minor post-installation damage; it's how to fix it cleanly before it becomes the thing you notice every time you walk into the room.
The critical difference with engineered hardwood: the top layer is a real wood veneer, usually between 2mm and 6mm thick depending on the product. That's your entire visual surface. Treating it like solid hardwood — sanding aggressively, using heat tools incorrectly, applying too much moisture — will damage or destroy that veneer permanently. Every repair technique in this guide is chosen specifically because it works within the constraints of an engineered construction.
Common Post-Installation Problems in Engineered Hardwood
Before picking up a repair tool, identify exactly what you're dealing with. The four most common post-install issues each have a different cause and solution.
Surface scratches and scuffs are the most frequent. These come from tool bags slid across the floor, knee pads, installation equipment, or even boot grit during the job. Most don't break through the factory finish — but some do, especially if something sharp or heavy was dragged across the plank.
Nail and staple marks appear where a flooring nailer struck slightly off-angle or the plank shifted during fastening. These leave a small indentation or discoloration near the edge of the board, usually within 1–2 inches of the long side.
Chipped edges and corners happen when planks are tapped into place with a pull bar or mallet and the edge splinters slightly. Engineered planks have a factory-finished edge that doesn't recover from impact the way raw wood does — once it chips, the raw core material is exposed.
Small gaps at seams can result from planks not being fully seated during installation, or from the floor acclimatizing after install in a room with lower humidity than where it was stored. These are usually 0.5–2mm wide and run along the short or long seam between boards.
All four are repairable without removing or replacing planks. The right tool depends entirely on which problem you have.

How to Fix Scratches and Surface Marks
The repair approach depends on depth. Run your fingernail across the scratch — if it glides over without catching, the damage is in the finish only. If it drops into a groove, the scratch has reached the veneer layer.
Finish-only scratches: Clean the area with a dry cloth. Apply a touch-up marker in the base color of the plank with a single light pass. Blend immediately with a cloth. For most factory-finished engineered floors, this closes the visual gap entirely. Follow with a small amount of hardwood floor polish to restore sheen and match the surrounding finish.
Scratches into the veneer: These need layered color, not just a single pass. Using the TUS Touch-Up Marker Set, start with a base tone close to the main body of the plank. Apply one pass, let it tack (30–60 seconds), then use a shade slightly darker than the grain lines in the surrounding wood to draw thin, irregular lines in the direction of the grain through the repaired area. Nail and staple marks: These are typically small depressions with some discoloration from the metal contact. Clean the mark, then use a fine-tip marker from the TUS set to fill in the color. Important constraint: Do not attempt to sand out scratches on engineered hardwood veneer. The veneer layer is thin — in many products, 3mm or less — and aggressive sanding will cut through it, exposing the plywood core and creating a permanent light patch that no marker can correct. Always use markers and wax as the first and only line of repair on veneer surfaces, especially near plank edges and seams where the veneer is thinnest.
How to Repair Chips, Gaps, and Edge Damage
Chipped edges and corners expose the raw core of the engineered plank — often a lighter-colored plywood or HDF material that looks nothing like the surface veneer. These need both structural fill and color restoration.

Allow it to firm up for 10 minutes, then use the putty knife at a low angle to scrape the excess flush with the plank surface. Once the filler is level, use touch-up markers to blend the repair to the surrounding finish. The edge of a plank often has a different sheen and tone than the face — apply marker at the same angle you'd view the edge when standing, not from directly above, to judge the color match accurately.
Small gaps at seams: For gaps under 1mm, a flexible wood caulk in a matching tone will compress and expand with seasonal movement without cracking. If gaps are appearing across multiple seams, consult the flooring manufacturer — this may indicate an installation or subfloor issue rather than a surface repair problem.
Mistakes to Avoid (That Can Ruin Engineered Flooring)
Sanding the veneer. This cannot be overstated. Even 150-grit sandpaper on an engineered veneer can cut through it in seconds, especially near edges. Any sanding done during a touch-up repair must be confined strictly to the wax filler only, never the surrounding wood surface.
Using water-based stain directly on raw exposed veneer. If a chip or deep scratch has exposed raw wood, stain will absorb unevenly and create a dark blotch that's impossible to reverse without replacing the plank. Use wax filler as the base and marker for color — both sit on the surface rather than absorbing into the fiber.
Applying touch-up products across multiple planks. Touch-up markers are for targeted repairs. Running a marker across a full plank or across a seam trying to "even out" the tone will deposit pigment on the existing factory finish, where it will look patchy and wear off unevenly. Keep repairs localized to the damaged area only.
Using steam mops or wet cloths before repairs are fully cured. Moisture is the enemy of both wax filler and freshly applied marker. Allow any repair a full 24 hours before exposing it to cleaning, traffic, or humidity.
Voiding the manufacturer warranty. Most engineered hardwood warranties exclude damage caused by improper repair methods, including sanding the veneer or using incompatible chemical products. Before any repair, check your product's warranty documentation. Wax filler and touch-up markers are universally safe — abrasive or chemical refinishing methods often are not.
