When they don't, or when they leave before you've had a chance to do a thorough walkthrough, the work falls to you. Common Issues Left After Floor Installation

New floor damage during installation is almost always in one of five categories. Recognizing the type determines the fix.

Nail marks and fastener impressions are specific to nail-down installation methods. The pneumatic nailer occasionally strikes at a slightly wrong angle or the driving force leaves a compression ring on the plank face near the tongue. These show as small circular depressions or short streaks — typically 1–3cm — near the long edges of planks. They're rarely deep but highly visible in raking light.

Surface scratches and drag marks come from equipment, tool cases, and the installation process itself. A heavy tile saw dragged across the floor before a protective layer was laid, a knee pad sliding across planks, or a pry bar set down carelessly — all leave marks. These are finish-layer damage in most cases: the scratch cuts through the topcoat without reaching the wood below.

Chipped plank edges and corners happen at doorways, transitions, and anywhere planks were cut to fit. End grain is the most vulnerable part of any hardwood plank; the saw cut exposes it and any subsequent impact — a dropped piece, a tool strike, the edge catching the door frame on the way in — creates a chip that leaves raw wood visible against the finished face.

Seam gaps with visible or mismatched filler are common on floating installations and glue-down work where seam filler is used to close minor gaps. The filler color rarely matches the floor perfectly — it's usually a universal shade that reads lighter or darker than the surrounding wood, making seams more visible than they should be.

Color inconsistencies and finish scuffs are the subtlest category: areas where the factory finish was disturbed during installation without creating a defined scratch. These often show as dull patches or slight color variation against the surrounding uniform finish.

Quick Inspection Checklist (What to Look For)

A systematic walkthrough immediately after installation — before furniture goes in and before the floor gets walked on extensively — catches everything while the planks are still clean and easy to see. Do this in good light, including a low-angle raking light check.

Work through the room in one direction, marking issues with a small piece of blue painter's tape as you go. Check the following:

Look along the plank edges and seams for chips, gaps, and filler mismatches. The edge bevel line between planks is where most chipping occurs and where filler color mismatches are most obvious.

Check the field of each plank (the flat face surface) for nail marks, tool impressions, and scratches. Get low enough that light grazes the surface — this reveals compression marks that are nearly invisible under overhead light.

Inspect doorways, transitions, and any cut plank ends for chip damage. These are the highest-probability damage locations in any installation.

Look at the floor from multiple angles under different light sources — natural daylight and artificial light reveal different types of damage. A scratch that's invisible under a warm LED may show clearly in morning sunlight.

Note sheen inconsistencies: areas that look duller or glossier than the surrounding floor, which may indicate finish scuffs or areas where cleaning product or adhesive residue was left behind.

How to Repair Chips, Gaps, and Seams

Individual repairs done correctly will address each specific issue — but the final step is stepping back and assessing the room as a whole, then doing any necessary blending work to make the repairs read consistently with the surrounding floor.

Check all repairs in raking light. After completing the repair list, get low and look across the floor with a strong light source at a shallow angle. This reveals any remaining sheen mismatches, hard color edges, or marker strokes that don't follow the grain correctly. This is the same inspection technique used at the beginning of the session, and running it again catches anything the standard repair pass missed.

Address sheen mismatches with buffing. For any repaired areas that read duller than the surrounding new floor, buff firmly with a dry lint-free cloth using circular motions. This smooths the dried marker surface and increases its reflectivity. On semi-gloss or gloss floors, a small amount of matching floor finish applied and buffed dry over the repair brings the sheen fully into line.

Blend marker edges with a cloth. Any marker application that has a hard visible edge — where the repair ends and the surrounding floor begins — can be softened by lightly wiping the boundary with a clean cloth, picking up a small amount of the dried pigment and diffusing it into the surrounding surface. This takes seconds and removes the most common tell of an inexperienced repair.

Re-inspect any seam filler work. Let the seam filler marker work dry for 15–20 minutes and then assess from standing height at multiple angles. Seam work is most visible in certain light directions — a seam that looks good in one direction may be visible in another. A second light pass of the darker marker, followed by gentle blotting, is usually sufficient to address any remaining visibility.
