A touch-up marker applied to the wrong finish type either won't adhere correctly, will leave a visible sheen mismatch, or will look fine initially and then peel within weeks. The color matching matters — but so does the finish compatibility, and the two problems require different solutions.
Most repair guides treat all hardwood floors as interchangeable. They aren't. An oil-finished floor has a fundamentally different surface chemistry than a polyurethane-finished one, and a matte finish presents a sheen-matching challenge that a gloss floor doesn't. Knowing which finish type you're working with is the prerequisite for every touch-up decision.
This guide maps each major hardwood floor finish type to the correct repair approach — and explains why the wrong product fails when it does.
Why Floor Finish Type Matters for Touch-Ups
The finish on a hardwood floor is not just a protective layer — it's the surface that any touch-up product has to bond with and visually match. Two variables determine whether a touch-up succeeds:
Adhesion compatibility. Some products bond readily to certain finish chemistries and won't bond at all to others. Applying a water-based product over a silicone-contaminated surface, or a field finish over a UV-cured aluminum-oxide coating, produces delamination rather than repair. Understanding the finish type prevents this category of failure entirely.
Sheen matching. Every floor finish exists on a sheen spectrum from flat matte to high gloss. When a touch-up product dries at a different sheen than the surrounding floor — even with a perfect color match — the repaired area is visible because it reflects light differently. Sheen mismatch is often more obvious than color mismatch, particularly on darker floors and in rooms with strong directional light.
These two variables — adhesion compatibility and sheen matching — are why finish identification comes before product selection every time.
Common Hardwood Floor Finishes (Quick Identification Guide)
You don't need a lab test to identify the finish type on your floor. These field tests narrow it down quickly.
The water drop test: Place a small drop of water on an inconspicuous area of the floor. If it beads and sits on the surface, the floor has a film finish (polyurethane or similar). If it absorbs into the wood within 30–60 seconds, the floor has a penetrating finish (oil or wax). If it absorbs but more slowly — sitting for a minute or two before disappearing — it may be an oil-based penetrating finish with a light topcoat.
The sheen reading: Look at the floor at a low angle in strong light. High-gloss finishes produce a clear reflection you can see objects in. Semi-gloss shows a soft, slightly blurred reflection. Satin shows a mild sheen with no distinct reflection. Matte and flat finishes show almost no sheen — the surface looks almost like raw wood in terms of light behavior.
The scratch appearance: On film finishes (polyurethane), scratches appear white or frosty because the topcoat has fractured and traps air. On oil-finished floors, scratches tend to show the raw wood color inside rather than the frosty white of a fractured film.
The age and origin indicator: Floors installed before the mid-1990s in the US were almost exclusively oil-based polyurethane or wax-finished. Floors installed after that era increasingly shifted to water-based products. Factory-finished (prefinished) planks from reputable manufacturers are almost always UV-cured aluminum-oxide — the hardest category.
The Right Touch-Up Method for Each Finish Type
Oil-finished floors (penetrating oil, hardwax oil)
Oil finishes penetrate the wood fiber rather than forming a film on top. Brands like Rubio Monocoat, Osmo, and Bona Craft Oil fall into this category. The surface has a natural, low-sheen appearance and feels slightly different from polyurethane — less plastic, more like the wood itself.

Water-based polyurethane
Water-based polyurethane is the most common finish on hardwood floors installed in the last two decades. It dries clear (not amber), is fast-curing, and produces a clean, consistent surface. It exists across the full sheen range — matte through high-gloss.
Touch-up approach: markers and wax filler work well on water-based polyurethane surfaces. Color adheres reliably and the sheen of the repair can be normalized with buffing or a light topcoat application. Water-based polyurethane is also the one finish type where a spot application of matching finish over a repair can sometimes work — provided the floor finish product is compatible with the existing coat and the surface is properly abraded. Test in an inconspicuous area first.
Oil-based polyurethane
Oil-based polyurethane is the older formulation and produces a distinctly amber tone that deepens over time — this is why older floors often have a warm, yellow-brown cast. The finish is thicker, takes longer to cure, and produces a slightly different surface texture than water-based.
Touch-up approach: identical to water-based polyurethane for marker and wax work. One important consideration: if you're attempting a spot coat of finish over the repair, use an oil-based product — water-based finish applied over oil-based finish can delaminate and produce a cloudy result. Color-matching markers on oil-based floors also needs to account for the amber shift in the surrounding finish: the floor reads warmer than the original stain color, and the marker selection should reflect that.
UV-cured aluminum-oxide (prefinished factory finish)
As covered in detail in the prefinished hardwood guide, this finish cannot receive field-applied topcoats. Polyurethane — oil-based or water-based — will not bond to the aluminum-oxide surface.

Wax finish (traditional wax-buffed floors)
Wax-finished floors are rare in new construction but common in older homes — particularly pre-1960s hardwood. The finish is a thin, matte wax layer buffed into the wood surface, requiring periodic re-waxing to maintain.
Touch-up approach: markers work on wax-finished floors but behave differently — the wax layer can repel pigment if it's thick or fresh. Clean the area with a wax-compatible cleaner to remove surface wax before marker application, and limit application to the scratch itself rather than the surrounding wax. Wax filler is the most compatible fill material for structural damage on these floors. Do not apply polyurethane over a wax-finished floor under any circumstances — the two products are incompatible and the polyurethane will never cure correctly over a waxed surface.
Lacquer and conversion varnish (commercial/specialty)
Lacquer finishes are less common in residential settings but appear in some luxury and custom flooring. They produce a distinctive high-gloss clarity and are more brittle than polyurethane.
Touch-up approach: marker and wax filler for the repair itself. Topcoat application over lacquer requires lacquer-compatible products — water-based polyurethane will not bond correctly. For most homeowners, treating the repair as a color-only fix (no topcoat) and matching the sheen through buffing is the safer approach than attempting a spot finish application.
How to Match Sheen (Matte, Satin, Gloss)
Sheen matching is the variable that most distinguishes a professional-looking repair from an amateur one. Color gets most of the attention, but a perfectly matched color at the wrong sheen level is still an obvious repair.
Matte and flat finishes are the most demanding for sheen matching because any glossier product applied over them creates an island of reflectivity in an otherwise non-reflective surface. After marker application on a matte floor, buff the repaired area firmly with a dry cloth — this smooths the pigment surface and reduces its natural sheen. If the repair still reads slightly glossy compared to the surrounding matte finish, a small amount of matte-compatible floor maintenance product applied over the repair and buffed dry will bring it into range.
On matte-finish floors, color matching alone is not enough — the repair can appear shiny even with a perfect color match. The sheen step is not optional; it's what makes the repair disappear.
Satin finishes sit at the most forgiving point on the sheen spectrum — there's enough reflectivity that a slight mismatch is less visible than on matte or high-gloss floors. After marker application and buffing, assess the repair in raking light. Minor sheen differences that are visible under close examination will be invisible at standing height.
Semi-gloss and gloss finishes show color mismatches more readily but are more forgiving about sheen mismatches in the other direction — the surrounding finish provides enough reflectivity that a slightly less-glossy repair reads correctly in normal lighting. After buffing the marker application, a small amount of matching paste wax buffed to a shine can raise the repair sheen on semi-gloss surfaces.
High-gloss (mirror finish) floors are the most demanding overall — both color and sheen need to match closely because the reflective surface makes every variation visible. Repairs on high-gloss floors benefit from a final application of high-gloss floor wax over the marker layer, buffed to the highest sheen achievable with a cloth. Perfect invisibility is difficult on high-gloss floors; the goal is a repair that reads consistently at normal standing height and in normal lighting conditions.
Mistakes to Avoid When Using the Wrong Product
Applying water-based finish over oil-contaminated surfaces. Oil residue — from oil-based floor cleaners, furniture polish, or the floor's own oil finish — prevents water-based products from bonding. The result is a milky, peeling topcoat within days. Always clean the repair area thoroughly with a compatible cleaner before any product application.
Using a high-gloss topcoat to "protect" a matte-floor repair. The most common sheen mismatch error. A gloss topcoat on a matte floor doesn't just look different — it looks exactly like a patch, highlighted by its own reflectivity against the surrounding flat surface.
Applying field finish over a UV-cured prefinished surface. No field-applied product — regardless of brand or formulation — bonds reliably to an aluminum-oxide UV-cured finish. This applies to polyurethane, lacquer, and maintenance oils not specifically formulated for aluminum-oxide surfaces. The product will appear to cure but will delaminate under foot traffic.
Skipping the sheen-matching step. A repair that passes a color test but fails a sheen test is still a visible repair. Buffing after marker application and adjusting with a sheen-compatible product takes 5 minutes and is the difference between a repair that disappears and one that draws attention every time light hits the floor.
Using the same product on different finish types in the same room. In rooms with mixed flooring — older sections with oil-based finish and newer sections with water-based — the same repair product may behave differently on each section. Test in each finish area separately before committing to a full repair session.
