Work in the condition that exposes the hardest problem first, then work backward.

  1. Inspect under the worst light before and after. View the damage under angled natural light first to see the full scope. Check the finished repair under that same light. Pass the angled-light test and it passes every other test.
  2. Apply in diffuse light, inspect in directional light. Overhead diffuse light gives accurate color feedback during application. After each pass, move the piece or move yourself to read sheen from a low angle. This catches sheen problems while they're still fixable.
  3. Blend the edges. The boundary of a repair is often louder than the repair itself. Build color in thin layers (light base tone, mid-tone body, then grain detail) so the transition softens.
